Frequently asked questions

What is wilate® and when is it prescribed?

Wilate® is a plasma-derived concentrate of human von Willebrand factor (VWF) and human coagulation factor VIII (FVIII), supplied as a powder and solvent for intravenous injection in 500 IU VWF/500 IU FVIII reconstituted with 5 mL, and 1000 IU VWF/1000 IU FVIII reconstituted with 10 mL. Both give 100 IU/mL of each factor.

In von Willebrand disease, wilate® is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of spontaneous and trauma-induced bleeds in all types of VWD in adult and pediatric patients where DDAVP is ineffective or contraindicated, and for the prevention and treatment of bleeding during and after surgical procedures.

In hemophilia A, wilate® is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of bleeding in congenital or acquired FVIII deficiency, and for the prevention and treatment of bleeding in minor surgical procedures. Health Canada has authorised pediatric use from 12 years in hemophilia A; there are insufficient data in children under 12 and in previously untreated patients. Refer to the Product Monograph for complete prescribing information.

What does the wilate® ProCare Program provide?

Home infusion training delivered by nurses experienced in bleeding disorder care, ongoing infusion support at home or in a clinic, coordination and delivery of ancillary infusion supplies, and a single nurse case manager as the point of contact for scheduling and questions. The Program is sponsored by Octapharma Canada Inc. and administered by Bayshore Specialty Rx Ltd.

Does the Program supply wilate® itself?

No. Product supply is unchanged. Wilate® continues to be supplied through the existing blood system and dispensed by the hemophilia treatment centre. ProCare covers training, support and ancillary supplies only.

Is there a cost to the patient or the centre?

No. The Program is provided at no charge to patients or to the treatment centre.

Who can be enrolled?

Any patient prescribed wilate® who needs infusion training, infusion support, or ancillary supplies that the hemophilia treatment centre does not provide. Enrollment is at the discretion of the treating healthcare professional, requires the patient's authorization, and is voluntary. Participation is not a condition of access to wilate® and a patient who declines is not treated differently.

Does enrollment change who is responsible for the patient's care?

No. The treating healthcare professional and the hemophilia treatment centre remain responsible for diagnosis, prescribing, dosing and clinical management. ProCare nurses deliver training and support within the plan you set.

What can the ProCare nurse do, and what can they not do?

Nurses are certified in IV therapy and peripheral line insertion and in Basic Life Support. They teach and supervise self-infusion, support infusion at home or in clinic, and report back on progress. They do not prescribe, do not alter the prescribed dose or regimen, and do not make treatment decisions. Any clinical question outside the training plan is referred to the treatment centre.

Can pediatric patients be enrolled, and can caregivers be trained?

Yes, where wilate® has been prescribed for that patient and the legally authorised representative has given authorization. Caregiver training is available.

Why is the patient's authorization needed before enrollment?

Because the Program cannot lawfully proceed without it. Bayshore needs the patient's, or the legally authorised representative's, authorization to collect, use and disclose their personal health information in order to confirm eligibility, deliver services and contact the patient about the Program. Without it, the enrollment cannot be processed.

Who holds the patient's information?

Bayshore is responsible for the personal health information of enrolled patients and holds it as the Program administrator. Octapharma does not receive identifiable patient information, and sees only aggregate or de-identified information about how the Program is operating.

How is a nurse assigned, and how quickly?

After the enrollment form is received, the nurse case manager assesses the support required and assigns a certified nurse in the patient's area.

Where is the Program available?

Bayshore Specialty Rx provides patients with access to one of Canada's largest integrated networks of specialty nursing and infusion services, supporting the delivery of the ProCare Patient Support Program across the country, with home visits and tailored arrangements for rural and remote communities. For coverage in a specific area, contact the Program with a completed enrolment form. The Program is not currently available in Quebec.

What ancillary supplies are included?

The Program provides the routine consumables needed for home infusion, where these are not supplied by the treatment centre. It does not cover specialized, custom or high-cost items, and any request outside routine consumables is not part of the Program.

How is a patient's status tracked?

Healthcare professionals can create an account on the Digital Gateway platform, which shows each patient at one of four stages: pending enrollment, pending schedule, pending therapy, on drug, or discharged. Visit updates, including self-infusion competency, appear within 48 hours. You can invite other members of your treatment centre team so the full ProCare patient load is visible in one place. The Digital Gateway is operated by Bayshore under its own terms and privacy policy.

What happens if a patient reacts during a training visit?

Nurses are certified in Basic Life Support and follow Bayshore's clinical escalation protocol, including emergency services where required. The treatment centre is notified, and any suspected adverse reaction is reported to Octapharma and to Health Canada.

How do I report a side effect or product complaint?

Report suspected adverse reactions and product quality complaints to Octapharma Canada Inc. at adr.canada@octapharma.com and to Health Canada through the Canada Vigilance Program at 1-866-234-2345. Reporting is not conditional on Program participation.

Can a patient leave the Program?

Yes, at any time and without giving a reason, by telling the nurse case manager or the treatment centre. Withdrawal does not affect the patient's prescription or their access to wilate®.

What happens if the patient stops wilate®?

Program services end, since ProCare supports patients prescribed wilate®. Bayshore retains the patient's records in line with its retention obligations.

In what languages is the Program delivered?

English and French.
